Log Haven in Millcreek Canyon
For my birthday, Kim and I had dinner at Log Haven in Millcreek Canyon. As Kim noted, you are just a few miles up the canyon from Salt Lake City, but you feel as if you’re in a mountain resort.
We were able to sit on the patio and enjoy outdoors of the mountains. As darkness fell, the pleasant coolness grew a tad chilly, and heaters were lit for our comfort. We noticed that a thoughtful waiter brought out a warm shawl for the woman sitting at the next table — now, that’s customer service!
I ordered the White Miso Halibut, topped with a seaweed butter and served in a pool of Japanese mushroom consomme with crispy carrot shreds as a garnish. I’ve always loved halibut’s mild flavor instead of a strong fishy flavor. And this halibut was moist, succulent, with almost a hint of sweetness. I savored every satisfying bite.
Kim had a juicy rib-eye steak, served with pickled carrots. We shared a side of mashed potatoes made more creamy and dreamy with fontina cheese; and a side of brussels sprouts that were sauteed, then tossed in honey-balsamic sauce.
For dessert, I had a Dark Chocolate Mint Cheesecake that was so rich and dense, and full of chocolate flavor that I had to box up half of it to enjoy the next day at home. Kim had a Coconut Banana Souffle, which was frozen, similar to ice cream, and served with a roasted pineapple sauce and candied macadamia nuts.
Of course it’s not wise for your wallets or your waistline to eat like this every night, but if you want to splurge, this is the way to go!
And speaking of waistlines, chef Dave Jones offers a 700-calorie, three-course meal that is high in nutrients but low in fat and carbs. The featured entree is grilled ahi tuna. I was tempted to try it. But as usual, I became intrigued with the other menu choices. Oh, well, there’s always next time.
Getting older isn’t that much fun, but a night out at Log Haven almost makes it worth it.
