Lost Texan BBQ’s Honor Wall
You can’t miss the Lost Texan BBQ’s Honor Wall when you come to the restaurant at 1144 W. 2700 North in Pleasant View. You’ll find dozens of framed portraits of military members, veterans and first responders.
Owners James and Marti Hammon said they started their Honor Wall tradition with their son, Jared Reaves, who was serving in the Coast Guard when he passed away from leukemia.
The Hammons’ daughter, Jessica, served in the Army and another son, Jake, served in the Marines. Their portraits are displayed as well.
James Hammon said anyone is welcome to contribute a photo of a friend or family member who has served. you can email a photo and name of the friend or family member to losttexanbbq@gmail.com. He will print, frame and post the photo on the Honor Wall.
“We are one of the most pro-military restaurants around,” said Marti Hammon when I interviewed the Hammons for a Standard-Examiner story. Marti, who is from Houston, is the “Lost Texan” of the restaurant’s name.
When she first moved to Utah, the two things she missed were real barbecue and live music. She learned to make her own, serving it at parties. Which led to catering gigs. Finally in 2015, the Hammons opened the Lost Texan BBQ.
“We make everything here ourselves; we smoke our own meats, and we make our own sides,” she said. The restaurant orders its rolls from Stoneground Bakery, and develops its own rubs and sauce recipes.
Besides the standard menu, there are daily specials.
In addition to the top seller — Texas-style smoked brisket, there are daily specials. Wednesday is smoked meatloaf — a combination of beef and pork, flavored with cheese, bacon and seasonings. Thursday’s special is burnt ends, where a whole smoked brisket is slow-cooked, then the ends are cut into chunks and smoked again.
On Friday and Saturday, pork ribs are the daily special.
One of James Hammon’s personal favorites is the seasoned, smoked chicken quarter — a leg and thigh. They also have a smoked, shredded chicken breast.
The meat portions are weighed, to make sure each customers gets their 1/4-pound-serving of meat.
Everything is served with a slice of white bread for mopping up the sauce and juices.
The $7.99 Kids Plate (half-portion) is for ages 8 and under, and well as ages 55 and over.
The menu also features the J-Roc Sandwich, named in honor of their son Jared Reaves, who passed away in 2019 from leukemia. All profits from the sandwich are donated to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society.
The J-ROC Sandwich features smoked sausage, pulled pork, mild or spicy Carolina sauce, coleslaw and pickles and onions on an 8” hoagie bun.
Due to staffing shortages and James’ recovery from a heart attack and bypass surgery, the restaurant is currently open Wednesday-Saturday, and closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
