No, Café “Bloomm” is not misspelled.

Proprietor Marikh Mathias said she chose the name “Bloomm” for her Roy restaurant for a favorite character on a TV show, named Ezra Bloom, “And I really liked that that name.”

Because her initials are MM, she decided to add the double “M” on the end, “To make us a little unique.”

And speaking of TV shows, Mathias may look a bit familiar to fans of “The Bachelor.” She appeared on the TV series 2018.

When I did a story about Café Bloomm for the Standard-Examiner, Mathias didn’t mention her stint on TV. But it sparked my interest when she seemed so comfortable posing for photos with some her signature menu items. Often, chefs or restaurateurs may seem stiff or awkward in front of a camera. So later on that day, I did a Google search, and sure enough her name came up as a contestant on “The Bachelor,” along with the term, “glam-shaming,” which was apparently a bit of controversy on the show.

When I asked about it, Mathias said she was OK with my mentioning that she was on “The Bachelor,” but added, “I get kinda shy about it.”

Well, Café Bloomm  is proof that there’s life after reality TV.

Mathias’ culinary experience comes from years of working in her parents’ restaurants, including Aroma Fine Indian Cuisine in Draper.

“My parents have had restaurants as long as I can remember,” she said.

They had a catering company together, but when the Covid pandemic hit, there were no events or parties to cater.

“So I started working as a private chef in Park City, and I was able to really hone in on my cooking skills,” Mathias said.

The Roy building, at 5128 S. 1900 West, was a former coffee shop and diner. Her parents bought as in investment.

“They showed it to me, they were going to rent it out, and I thought, why don’t I give this place a shot, give it a new life?” said Mathias.

They spent a year and a half renovating it into a space with clean, pared-down décor, with lots of light from the large windows. It opened in last October.

The menu is minimalist — small enough to execute well, while covering a variety of sweet and savory tastes.

People can order online, or at the drive-through window on their way to work. Others prefer to come inside to sip coffee or enjoy a leisurely breakfast or lunch.

One thing you can’t do is order by phone, as Café Bloomm currently doesn’t currently have a phone or phone number.

Mathias takes pride in the coffee, which comes from Wasatch Roasting Company in Ogden.

“I’d always search for good coffee and good food, but could never find them together at the same place,” said Mathias. “Here, you can get both, and it’s convenient. We create everything made-to-order, so it’s hot and fresh.”

The signature Pretzel Bun Egg Sandwich uses a pretzel bun, made by a company called Pretzilla, Mathias said. It’s like a soft pretzel — slightly chewy on the outside, soft on the inside. It’s filled with fluffy, soft-scrambled egg, white cheddar, and bacon; and laced with house-made Dijonaise dressing.

“It’s the  perfect breakfast sandwich,” said Mathias, who considers it her favorite dish on the menu.

“Fluffy” eggs are a menu staple. Soft-scrambled with butter, “They are really pillowy, and they go perfect on the sandwich and inside the burrito, and as a side with bacon or hash browns. It’s a really comforting way to eat,” Mathias said.

Avocado toast is another favorite, with sliced vanned out of sourdough bread that’s spread with romesco sauce.

Lunch choices currently are the Bloomm Burger (also with a pretzel bun), a fried chicken sandwich, and a recently added rotisserie chicken sandwich.

On the sweeter side, the Nutella Banana Bread has crème brulee twist. The thick-sliced banana bread is spread with Nutella, and topped with bananas. Then the bananas are flamed with a brulee torch to caramelize the bananas’ sugar.

“It’s something I have been doing for my family for years,” said Mathias. “Once you taste it, you’ll want it all the time.”

The restaurant is open Tuesday-Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both breakfast and lunch are served all day.

The Salted Caramel Pretzel Latte is a signature drink — espresso, salted caramel, pretzel simple syrup, and a choice of milk.

“It’s a play off of our pretzel bun,” Mathias said.

There’s also a maple latte aptly named, called Canadian, Eh?

Non-coffee drinkers can warm up with hot chocolate.

Food prices range from about $4 to $12; coffee drinks are about $2.50 to $8.

Cafe Bloomm’s mission statement reads: “We believe in good food. We believe in local. We believe in community. That’s why we created Café Bloomm. Bloomm is a place you never have to sacrifice quality for convenience.”
