Chef Ted Mathesius, most recently chef of Sydney’s in Mantua, is doing a pop-up BBQ dinner Friday May 27, 7 p.m. at the Logan Event Center, 185 E. Cache Valley Blvd. (east parking lot behind the Cache Valley Mall). After the dinner, the Event Center is hosting a drag queen show at 8 p.m. According to Chef Ted, the dinner is $25 per person. If you want to stay for the drag show, it’s $15. The event is being billed as
#smokeringsanddragqueens.

Chef Ted is an experienced BBQ pit master, and the menu features some of his specialties such as smoked Pork Butt, Brisket, Ted’s Tater Salad, Brigham Baked Beans, Bell Pepper Cabbage Slaw, the Lunch Man’s Rolls, Not Your Mom’s Oat Cake, for $25. The price doesn’t include alcoholic beverages, but they can be purchased separately.

Reservations are required, as seating is limited. You can buy tickets at Greek Streak II, or online at Loganeventcenter.com, (click on May 26 Drag Queen event and buy the $25 dinner add-on) or 435-363-3699.

Mathesius is well known in Cache Valley, as he was chef of two former Logan landmarks during their glory days — the Copper Mill and Hamilton’s. (Gone but not forgotten by old-timers). He later became executive chef of Adobe Inc.’s corporate dining in Lehi, and then Vivint’s corporate dining. He spent much of last year heading up the kitchen at Sydney’s in Mantua, where he created some buzz for his “comfort food on steroids” and Saturday barbecue dinners.

When I interviewed Chef Ted a few months ago, he told me that smoked pork is one of his favorite go-to meals —  “For me, it’s like meat candy,” he said.

A few months ago, Mathesius left Sydney’s to become the territorial manager with U.S. Foods. But he moonlights occasionally with pop-up dinners such as the upcoming BBQ. He tells me plans are in the works for an upcoming Tex-Mex menu with chef Gerardo Cardona, called “Ted-Mex.” Stay tuned.
