Goodems is a protein-based candy to soothe your sweet tooth without sugar or carbs.

“If you have health goals and a sweet tooth to feed daily, we’re confident you’ll love them,” said Matt Seely, a Cache Valley entrepreneur. He came up with the idea of Goodems after losing about over 100 pounds and keeping it off for over ten years. (Keep in mind, this was BEFORE the magic of Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity and other so-called wonder drugs.)

“I totally abstained from sweets for 10 whole years after losing the weight,” Seely told me. “When I finally broke that fast by having ice cream with my fiancé when we got engaged (to celebrate!) I knew I needed something to help satiate my sweet tooth that wasn’t sugary sweets.”

Nowadays, he might have an occasional sugar treat, but, he prefers the nutritious sweetness of his own candy creation. “When the sweet cravings hit but I don’t have a sugary treat planned into my diet that day, I grab a Goodems.”

With the holiday season nearing its end and New Year’s resolutions on the horizon, most people start getting serious about getting (or staying) in shape. And Goodems can be a piece of that puzzle.

When he came up with the idea of a heathy hard candy that he could suck on, he sought many manufacturers.

“Most of them told me they wouldn’t work with me until I had at least 5K in orders per month,” he said. That’s a challenge if you don’t yet have product for customers to try.

“I finally found a candy manufacturer out of Orem that was willing to work with us,” Matt said. “We feel so lucky to be working with local Utahns and are so grateful for their help in this process.”

These hard candy drops and lollipops contain whey protein and polydextrose, and are sweetened with a combination of monk fruit, stevia, and acesulfame potassium. Flavors include green apple, lemonade, strawberry smoothie, cookies ‘n’ cream, chocolate cereal, not-so-blue raspberry, and cinnamon.

“We started selling just under a year ago and have been blown away with the love our candy has received thus far,” he said.

There are already sugar-free candies on the market. A few things that sets Goodems apart is –

– They pack more nutrition than most low-sugar candies. Besides 0 grams of sugar, you’re also getting fiber and protein.

-They are keto-friendly. “With a high amount of soluble fibers negating the carbohydrates, you can safely enjoy Goodems protein candy and stay in ketosis,” Matt said..

  – Also, they have a natural look, without bright food coloring.

“We partner with a production company that specializes in old fashioned candy. So our drops and suckers might not be corporate/Hershey candy smooth, but that’s what you get when you go back to our natural ingredient roots,” Seely said.

Also the company is committed to using 100% natural coloring, “against the advice of some marketing gurus we’ve worked with,” he added. “Sometimes that yields some interesting results, but they won’t dye your mouth red or blue. Rest assured, no matter what color your candy is, the taste will be on point.”

And about the taste … After trying them, I’ll warn you, don’t expect Hershey’s Kisses. Some are tart like a “sour” candy. The connamon was my favorite in the sample pack, and its pleasant flavor makes you think of Red Hots candies.

“Does a protein shake taste like a milkshake? Not quite,” Seely says, as a comparison. “But, are they good when you’ve finished an active day and want something yummy.”

Flavors include green apple, lemonade, strawberry smoothie, cookies ‘n’ cream, chocolate cereal, not-so-blue raspberry, and cinnamon.

One serving — six of the cough-drop size drops — contains 4 grams of protein, 0 grams of sugar, 0 grams net carbs, and 10 grams of fiber, and 90 calories. Since one drop can be sucked on in your mouth for awhile, it would likely take some time to consume a whole serving.

Matt said he’s often asked about the cost, which retails at $11.99 per tin of 12 drops. (You can buy a $29.99 bag that gives you more drops for the money.)

“What people aren’t seeing is that ounce-for-ounce we are actually more affordable than other healthy candy they are already buying,” he said. “Smart Sweets, for example, is often $4 per serving and a serving only lasts around 15 minutes. Goodems is more like $2.50 per serving and each serving gives almost 2 hours of lasting enjoyment on average.”

Also Goodems packs more nutrition than most low-sugar candies. Besides 0 grams of sugar, you’re also getting fiber and protein.
