Scrambled! Is Expanding to Ogden This Summer
Scrambled! is getting a second location, this time in Ogden. Owner Oscar Rodriguez says the Layton breakfast-and-lunch spot should be opening in Ogden this summer.
“We just took over the old Sonic on Washington (Boulevard). We are super stoked to come to Weber County,” Rodriguez wrote in a message to me. He’s planning to make a formal announcement on the restaurant’s 4th anniversary, which is March 7.
The now-closed Sonic building is located on 1241 Washington Blvd.
Scrambled! opened on 2151 N. Hill Field Road in Layton in March 2020. It offers traditional breakfast favorites like pancakes, waffles, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, omelets, even Utah-style scones and cinnamon rolls.
And there are more trendy items like avocado toast and egg-white veggie omelet. And a full menu of lattes, cappuccino and other drinks, with the coffee supplied by Daily Rise Roasting Company in Layton.
The lunch menu offers burgers, chili verde, sandwiches and salads, but breakfast items make up about 75 percent of the orders, even during lunch hours, Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez says the Ogden location will have the same fast casual format, the same menu and prices.
“The only difference will be that this space will allow us to produce at a greater capacity,” he said.
How soon can we expect to order an Oscar’s Wicked Skillet in Ogden?
“We are shooting for a July opening, but it will all depend on how fast Ogden city approves our permits,” he said. “I’ll definitely keep you posted as we get further along!”
When Rodriguez opened the first Scrambled! in a Layton strip mall, he initially planned to use traditional sit-down service. But he realized there were advantages to a fast-casual format and a drive-through window. Especially since the Covid pandemic closed down in-restaurant dining just when Scrambled! opened, the drive-through window kept the business afloat. The window still stays pretty busy, since the restaurant opens Monday through Saturday at 5 a.m. “We have a niche in this area, being accessible before anyone else is open.”
“Also, fast-casual creates more turnover and gives our customers their independence to place their order, and leave when they want,” Rodriguez said. “I have regulars who come in every day and get a cup of coffee and do their paperwork for the day.”
This is the second Layton restaurant to expand to Ogden this year. Red Fort Cuisine of India bought the former El Matador building in December, and is working to open as soon as possible. City permits, equipment, hiring staff, remodeling, etc. can be time-consuming. Again, we’ll keep you posted.
