Sonora Grill, at 2310 Kiesel Avenue in Ogden, is hosting a Dining For Dollars fundraiser to help first-generation immigrant students finish college. On April 10, customers can dine at the restaurant from 7 a.m.-9 p.m., and one hundred percent of all sales and contributions, will go directly towards the Sonora Grill scholarship program. An anonymous donor will match Sonora Grill’s donation, up to $25,000.
New this year, the restaurant is opening for breakfast to accommodate the community’s eagerness to participate in this event. Reservations are recommended. And hopefully it will be nice enough weather to enjoy the Sonora Grill’s patio.
Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. with lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. A special scholarship menu will be offered for $12 and includes choice of entrée, chips, salsa and a drink. Regular menu items will also be available.
“We invite everyone to lend their support and help benefit talented and underserved students in our community,” said Steve Ballard, owner of Sonora Grill. “The event provides scholarships to second-year students who have overcome extreme hardships in their pursuit of education. All you have to do to help is come eat at Sonora Grill on April 10.”
Last year, $29,000 was raised during the Dining for Dollars event.
Weber State sophomore, Nestor Robles, was the first Sonora Grill Scholarship recipient. He was awarded a two-year, full-ride scholarship. The money from last year’s event also provided partial scholarships for 25 other Weber State University students.
Some thirty students applied for the Sonora Grill Scholarship in 2013. Applicants must be U.S. high school graduates, first generation college students, and unable to receive financial aid due to their parents’ resident status.
Utah is one of thirteen states that have passed laws allowing in-state tuition rates for immigrant students at the public college and university level. The Develop, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (Dream Act) grants in-state status, but does not qualify the immigrant students for financial assistance.
