Bow Tie Creamery in South Ogden

Dark chocolate gelato at Bow Tie Creamery in South Ogden, Utah.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend invited me to a pre-opening party for Bow Tie Creamery, a new  ice cream shop located at 1479 E 5600 S #B102, South Ogden.  (For a general direction, it’s in the little strip mall next to Maria’s Mexican Restaurant.)

At the time, the place was just getting up and running. The owner, C.F. Diamond, told me the permanent countertops had yet to be installed. (It happens that his past work experience has been in installing countertops.)

Now Bow Tie Creamery is open, here’s all the info so you can check it out. The store offers artisan-type ice cream, made on the premises in small, six-quart batches. There are both classic and original  flavors, such as Chocolate Nutella,  Vanilla Custard, Key Lime Pie, Lemon Blueberry, Cake Batter, Horchata, Speculaas, S’mores, Raspberry Sour Cream, Salted Caramel, Dark Chocolate Gelato, Espresso Gelato, Piña Colada (Vegan, Dairy Free) Lemon Ice (Dairy Free).

There are also limited-time flavors — for October you can try  Pumpkin Spice, Black Licorice or Gingerbread Feta.

I tried a scoop of the Dark Chocolate Gelato, and it was excellent — rich and creamy, with a strong chocolate presence. Price is $4 per scoop. There are a few tables and chairs so you can sit and enjoy it.

Diamond told me he and his son-in-law, Matt Healey, got the idea from visiting a similar smalll-batch ice cream shop in California.

Will the idea fly in South Ogden? Utahns have a proven sweet tooth for ice cream, but the winter months might be a hard sell. Only time will tell.
