Utah’s Famous Fruitway

Since I was in Ogden this morning, I made a “cherry run”  to Utah’s Famous Fruitway in Box Elder County. This is a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 89, from Perry to Brigham City, where you can buy fresh-picked produce from the local farms and orchards.

A few weeks ago I did a story on the Fruitway which will run in next month’s Wasatch View magazine. This is a super busy time of year for farmers, so it took a lot of calls and voicemails to get in touch with some of them.  Today, I made a point to stop and buy from the roadside stands of the famers who took the time to call me back, although not all of them are open yet. I appreciated their help, and I will remember it every time I make a Fruitway run!

I found some beautiful cherries, golden-ripe apricots, and peas. We will be eating pretty well at our house for the next few days!  It will be a few more weeks before you can find early peaches or corn.  Most of the stands should be open by then.

To read about some of the Fruitway’s history, look for my upcoming article in Wasatch View. The magazine is published by the Standard-Examiner, and it comes inside the Standard-Examiner the last Monday of the month.
