Everbowl offers a chance to explore good-for-you foods such as acai, goji berries, spirulina algae, and chia. Station Park in Farmington is one of around 35 locations of this Southern California-based chain. There are also shops in Orem and St. George.

I recently did a story for the Standard-Examiner about Everbowl. Here are some fast facts I discovered:

1. It’s a fast-casual, custom-build format. The staffers behind the counter add your choice of ingredients and top it with beautiful fresh fruit.

2.  Every choice is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, with no added sugars, according to manager Ali Walton.

3. The choices are mainly considered “superfoods,” which are foods that offer superior nutritional value for the amount of calories they contain. Many of thel isted ingredients are known for antioxidants — substances that help the body protect against cell damage and health issues such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

4.   The bowls start with a choice of base: one type is water-based, similar to sorbet; and one type made with coconut milk that has an ice cream-ish texture and mouthfeel.

These bases come in flavors such as acai, mango, Blue Majic (containing spirulina algae, giving it a light blue color), vanilla, coconut, Cacao Wow (chocolate), matcha (green tea), and pitaya (dragon fruit).

5. Then you can add layers such as “overnight oats” (steel-cut oats soaked overnight for a chewy texture), granola, or a gray-colored chia pudding that’s made with coconut milk and has a tapioca-like texture.

6.   Fruit choices include strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, kiwi, grapes and apples.

7.   Then there are dry toppings: coconut flakes, sliced almonds, caco nibs, gogi berries, dried pineapple and dried mango.

 8. You can finish it off with a drizzle of honey, agave, peanut butter or almond butter and a sprinkle of seeds or cinnamon.

  9. These custom-made, or “Whatever” bowls, run from $8.95 for a small (12-ounce) bowl; are $10.95 for a medium (16-ounce) bowl, and $13.95 for a large (24-ounce) bowl. That’s quite a bit steeper than, say, a hot fudge sundae at Dairy Queen, or even a make-your-own frozen yogurt. But, they are supposed to be better for you.

 10. Although customizing your own ingredients is fun, there are several “local favorites” to choose from, and these are $1 less that the custom “Whatever” bowls.

The top-seller is the PB Cacao Wow. It has two bases: Cacao Wow (chocolate), and vanilla. It’s topped with granola, bananas, strawberries, cacao nibs, and peanut butter.

“Even people who don’t like ‘healthy’ will like it,” said Walton.

  11. The Blue Lagoon Bowl is Walton’s personal favorite, although a lot of customers feel a little intimidated by the spirulina algae it contains. “It’s is good for anti-aging, and good for your skin,” said Walton of the Blue Majic algae base. “But it also mixes the flavors together and tones down the tartness of the fruit, and makes it blue.”

The Blue Lagoon contains pitaya or dragon fruit, which is hot pink and tastes somewhat like fruit punch.  There’s some chewy texture from the chia pudding and overnight oats, and it’s topped with sliced banana, strawberries and pineapple.

  12. The customer base varies with the time of day, said Walton. Mornings, it’s adults coming from the gym. During lunch, there are lots of teens. And at night, there are families with kids.

  13. Everbowl is located at 256 N. University Drive on the west side of  Station Park, in the same building as Blaze Pizza and Slapfish.

14. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
