Salt of the Earth Spa Products: Five Facts
Who knew that high-end spa products — body creams, scrubs, massage lotions and so on — are made here in Utah?
A few weeks ago I checked out the Salt of the Earth blending factory in North Salt Lake. When you walk in, you’re immediately aware of the fragrant scents wafting through the air. Yes, you’ve entered the magical world of lotions and potions. The company makes high-end body scrubs, creams, masks, massage oils, bath salts, etc. that are used for spa treatments. I wrote a column about it for the Standard-Examiner.
Here are some interesting things I learned:
1. The spa products contain 72 trace minerals from the Great Salt Lake. It’s a similar idea to products touted for their Dead Sea minerals, which are thought to be beneficial for the skin and body. These weren’t added until last year, said owner Paul Heslop.
“A lot of spas were using products with minerals from the Dead Sea, and the carbon footprint is smaller if it comes from the Great Salt Lake than shipped all the way from the Dead Sea,” he told me. “We are excited to see that we have a piece of the Great Salt Lake in all our products. We have a lot of Utah pride.”
And speaking of carbon footprint, the product jars are designed to be refillable.
2. Paul Heslop bought the company in 2008, when he was graduating from Weber State University in sales. At the time, he had never had a massage and didn’t know what a pedicure was. (He does now!)
3. The company’s top-selling product is whipped body creme. Like many Salt of the Earth products, it contains grapeseed oil.
4. The big advantage of Salt of the Earth products is that they can be customized for any spa, with the type of scent, exfoliation level, and other ingredients desired. For instance, Salt of the Earth created products for the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island in Florida with a special “Blossoms of Amelia” scent. At a Maui spa, they custom-blended products with a white ginger fragrance. They have a “blend bar” that allows the therapist to customize the treatment products for each client, too.
5. The products are used in top-notch hotel spas around the country, including the Grand America and Stein Eriksen Lodge here in Utah. They are also used at the Sego Lily Day Spas in Utah. I asked Taylee Goff, of the Bountiful Sego Lily Day Spa, about the product. Here’s her email response:
