Sailor Mylroie of Santa Clara, Washington County, is one of the top ten semi-finalists of the Jif Most Creative Sandwich Contest. The 12-year-old’s recipe, Pomegranate Bejeweled Cashew Chicken Pockets, could net her a $25,000 scholarship.

Her recipe is posted online at http://www.jif.com/Promotions/Most-Creative-Peanut-Butter. The five children who garner the most votes will receive a trip to New York City to make their sandwich for judges.

Sailor has entered the Jif contest four times, but has never made it to the finals. Since she’s now 12 years old, this is her last year of eligibility.

“This is her last chance, so we’re really trying to get some votes in,” said her mother, Erin Mylroie.

Sailor definitely pulled out the stops on creativity. Her recipe calls for Jif cashew butter instead of peanut butter, and has an Asian flair with soy sauce, coconut milk and Korean red pepper paste. It is served in a pita pocket. The recipe, along with the other entries, can be found at http://www.jif.com/Promotions/Most-Creative-Peanut-Butter.

Her younger brother, West, was a runner-up several years ago, which earned him a $2,500 college scholarship.

“I’ve entered a lot of contests, and when you find out you win, that’s really exciting,” Sailor Mylroie said in a previous phone interview. “It’s OK if I don’t win, because I always enter more.”

They are apparently following in the culinary footsteps of their mother, Erin Renouf Mylroie, one of Utah’s most successful recipe contestants. She has been a finalist in two Pillsbury Bake-offs, the Food Network’s Ultimate Recipe Challenge and the grand prize winner of Rachael Ray’s Burger Bash contest. She also took fifth place in the National Chicken Cooking Contest and was a runner-up in the National Beef Cook-Off.

The Mylroie kids have were also finalists in the Avocados From Mexico video contes a few years ago. “They both love to cook,” Erin Mylroie said in a phone interview. “They’re always at my elbows fighting for a chance to help in the kitchen.”
