Prospector Popcorn is a gourmet popcorn brand that is also a nonprofit employing people with disabilities. Currently, 200 of its employees — or 74% of the workforce — have a disability.

On Jan. 19 (it’s apparently National Popcorn Day, who knew?), the company website is hosting a sale of 20% off its regular prices, all day.

The popcorn is popped fresh daily at the Prospector Theater in Ridgefield, Conn. According to a company press release, Prospector Popcorn’s goal is to transform the lives of disabled individuals by giving them equal, competitive and integrated employment opportunities.

“With every morsel munched, we create more jobs for America’s most talented — yet underrepresented — population.”

I sampled three of the popcorns. My favorite was Buffalo Cheddar — hot, sweet and savory all at the same time, thanks to a mix of cayenne, caramel and cheddar flavors.

For sweet decadence, the Belgian Chocolate Toffee is caramel popcorn mixed with pretzels, toffee and drizzles of Belgian chocolate.

The Classic Caramel flavor is just what you’d expect, sweet, buttery, with a hint of vanilla.

Regular prices are $20 for a pack that contains three 4-ounce bags. That’s $6.67 per bag, which is about 4 cups of popcorn. Somewhat pricey, but, the 20% off sale would bring it down to $5.34 per bag, which is more do-able.

Each the back of each bag has some entertaining “corny” puns, such as “We live a higher quality of life through the popportunities that meaningful work provides,” and “Gourmet Popcorn is a popular part of our moviegoing experience.”
