A friend who works with the Utah-based Salsa Queen recently sent me me a pack of the company’s five salsa products that are being sold online. Since Salsa Queen products are sold in lots of local grocery stores, including Smith’s, Harmon’s and Associated Foods such as Macey’s, I’d be more inclined to just buy the old-school way, when I’m grocery shopping. But, in an era when DoorDash and Ubereats are delivering McDonald’s to doorsteps around the country, I guess having gourmet salsa delivered is normal.

When I opened the box, I was impressed with the protective packaging and ice packs that kept the salsa cold during its journey. I was also impressed when I heard the success story of Maharba Zapata, who started the company in 2014 as a single mother raising her seven children. She began making salsa in her kitchen and selling it as farmers markets.  Four years later, she and her 40 employees are making salsa from her 3,000-square foot commercial kitchen and selling it in nearly 100 stores.

“So now we’re joining the growing list of fresh-food delivery brands, offering our unique, fresh flavors to customers via fast two-day shipping.”

There’s a three-container option for $29.95, or a five-container assortment for $39.95, at https://salsaqueen.com.

Through the end of October, Salsa Queen is offering Chewandchat.com readers a special 5% discount on any online purchase, if you enter the promo code Chew at checkout.

Salsa Queen’s five salsa products.

About the products:  Queso Chipotle and Creamy Jalapeno dips both have a creamy sour cream/mayo base, and both are medium, heat-wise. The Queso has the smoky flavor of chipotle chiles and a little tomato; while the Jalapeno dip has, you guessed it, jalapenos.

The Tomatillo Salsa features roasted tomatillos, lime juice, garlic, cilantro, onion powder. Red pepper flakes pack some heat.

The Red Chili, is the most fiery, with a kick from both chili powder and red pepper flakes. It deserves its “hot” rating.

My favorite was the Pico — small dices of tomato, onions, peppers with lime juice and cilantro. I love freshly made pico, but I don’t like all the chopping and dicing to make my own. It’s pretty mild, with lots of flavor but not that much heat. I’d love to mash up a couple of avocados and mix in some of this pico and turn it into a quick-and-easy guacamole.

Since I’ve often used salsa in soups and casseroles, I enjoyed browsing Marhaba’s many salsa-using recipes on the Salsa Queen website — Spicy Stuffed Peppers, Grilled Steak Pasta, Enchiladas Suiza and so on. The tomatillo salsa could be simmered with pork or chicken, or mixed with ranch dressing for a salad dressing. Lots of possibilities here.
