Biggest Loser: Scott Mitchell Survives Comeback Canyon

After getting voted off the Biggest Loser ranch in the last episode, Utah contestant Scott Mitchell was down, but not out. He managed to best Damien Woody at Comeback Canyon. It looked like a week of intense competition with two former NFL players vying for the right to stay another week under trainer Bob Harper’s guidance. When they weighed in, Scott lost 9 pounds and Damien lost two.

It seemed predictable that Scott would pull a big number, after losing only nothing the week before. Damien lost 11 pounds the week before, a tough number to sustain. But, you never know. In the last episode it was pretty shocking to have Scott not lose any weight at all, and Toma actually gaining a pound. It raises the questions of whether there was some behind-the-scenes strategizing going on. (Two contestants from past seasons, Heather Hansen and Deni Hill, each told me that they purposely waterloaded to throw the weigh-in for strategy purposes. So yes, it happens.)

Meanwhile, back at the ranch…. JJ and Woody ended up below the yellow line. Was there any question that JJ would be sent packing? Rob, also a member of the original red team, was correct to be concerned that former white team members still have a strong bond, and they have the numbers to vote someone off. Which, they did.

During the voting, it always sounds so sincere when the players give their reasons, you know, that one person has a better support system and the other person “needs to be here.” But, this is a game, and $250,000 is at stake. People who get voted off are usually the biggest threat, or they aren’t part of an alliance.

But, I love the Comeback Canyon twist. Now when a person leaves, viewers aren’t as sad because we know the player has another week. And their transformation is always inspiring.  Damien looked great, and he’s enjoying his family and job. I don’t think he needs the $250,000.

It will be interesting to see who will come out on top at Comeback Canyon in the next episode — Scott or JJ.
