Old-School Halloween Treats: Witch Hat Cookies

For my Standard-Examiner column that ran on Oct. 22, I wrote about old-school Halloween treats such as popcorn balls, caramel apples and Witch Hat Cookies.

I’m not sure when or where I first saw Witch Hat Cookies, but it was at least 20 years ago. Surely that  qualifies as “old school.” Or at least, “old hat.”

I just thought they were really cute and simple to make. They were so easy that last week when my  6-year-old granddaughter, Jayden, came over, I set her up to the table with fudge-stripe cookies, Hershey’s Kisses, and a small bowl of orange-tinted frosting. She had fun doing it all on her own.  She displayed them on a cupcake stand.

Chocolate kiss candies

Orange or white frosting

Invert the cookies so they’re chocolate-side up. Dip the bottom of an unwrapped chocolate kiss into the frosting, then set it over the whole in the middle. There should be enough frosting to squish out from under the kiss, forming a little ribbon around the hat. For a more tidy look, you can use a decorator tube to pipe icing around the edge of the kiss to make it look like a bow.
